Wii & Adults

Even though it’s a bit older, I just had to share this short videoclip. It’s a short vid that shows adults playing Wii Sports. I love how they were able to capture the facial expressions of the players.
Although I consider myself as a somewhat hardcore gamer & proud PlayStation 3 owner (sorry for the fangirling), I recently became more and more interested in Nintendo’s products & marketing strategy. I love the open character of Nintendo’s latest games. They might not be jaw dropping visually, but they have a high social factor. I don’t have to explain difficult button combinations, it’s simply ‘plug & play’. Everybody can join the fun…
I recently bought a Nintendo DSi plus Brain Age for my mom (60 yrs old) and dad (62 yrs old). It will be interesting to see how they will adopt it, instead of using the classic puzzle books. Just like young kids or teens they aren’t very interested in reading the manual. They were very enthusiastic after a short demo round of Brain Age, so it looks promising! I also showed the short clip of the Wii players to my parents and they again were very enthusiastic.
Both my mom and dad work and have worked with elderly people, taking care of them or in policy making. Next to that they are pretty tech savvy using Youtube, browsing The Internet and both owning a high end mobile phone of Sony Ericsson. And last but not least… they hear me talk a lot about taking videogames serious and technology supporting people. So they might be already very receptive to new ways to support/stimulate the elderly.
