Final Verdict: Tomb Raider Underworld
Dec 27 - by Aleida

Some days ago I finally decided to continue my savefile from Tomb Raider Underworld on PlayStation 3 from November last year! I didn’t play the game for almost a year, but on the same day I continued the game I managed to finally complete it. Now it’s definitely time for a final verdict…
Plot
Tomb Raider: Underworld also known as ‘Tomb Raider 8′ continues the storyline from ‘Tomb Raider: Legend’. Lara Croft has learned that she might be able to find her missing mother in Avalon. Lara embarks on a new quest to find a way to Avalon. This time Thor’s Hammer is the key to unlock the doors to Helheim or Avalon. Of course finding Thor’s Hammer isn’t easy. To wield the powerful hammer Lara must first find Thor’s gauntlets and belt. While trying to find all the artefacts and unlock the doors to Avalon she faces old enemies such as Amanda Evert and Jacqueline Natla.
I remember I totally fell in love with the CG trailer (above) and I was so looking forward to playing the game. I already completed Tomb Raider: Legend on my PlayStation Portable so I definitely wanted to know how the story would continue. I got the game on it’s release on November 18th, 2008.
Final Verdict
I must say that I’m a Tomb Raider fan and I really like Lara Croft. I don’t see her as a lust object just for males to enjoy. I really like that Lara isn’t just sexy but also very powerful. When Lara was played by Angelina Jolie in the movies I really started to like Tomb Raider even more. It’s also great to have a female play a leading role in a videogame. In a way I see Lara Croft as a rolemodel because she has very female features yet she is no damsel in distress and very capable of saving her self.
I really loved the graphics in Tomb Raider: Underworld. The beautifully designed levels made me really enjoy moving forward on a slower pace. I really took the time to discover the various locations in the game. With some difficult jumps and puzzles to solve it’s nice to take your time! Sometimes it was a bit hard to navigate and working with the camera controlls. I have jumped towards Lara’s death many times. Even though I’m no star when it comes to solving puzzles I managed to get through the game without too much trouble. Tomb Raider: Underworld isn’t very difficult, but it’s definitely not too easy either.

Tomb Raider: Underworld was actually the first game I encountered that is ‘localized’. It has a Dutch menu and subtitles. When I needed some hints to progress in the game I would get those in Dutch as well! It was definitely the first time I saw that in a game. I really liked how the creators included ‘Field Assistance’ which gives you hints in 2 levels. You can choose the follow up hint as well if you really can’t figure something out by yourself after hearing the first one.
The storyline is pretty solid, but it is probably a bit stronger when you’ve played Tomb Raider: Legend. In Legend you actually see how Lara’s mother disappears and you can understand why Lara wants to find her mother so desperately. I actually felt sad when I learned the truth while completing Tomb Raider: Underworld.
If you’re a fan of action adventure games and can handle exploring vast locations on your own you should definitely pick up Tomb Raider: Underworld. You can probably pick it up for a bargain price since it’s been re-released as a Greatest Hits or Platinum title on PlayStation 3 earlier this year.
