Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010) is a science-fiction action-horror film written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, and starring one of my favorite actresses Milla Jovovich. It is the fourth installment in a series of film adaptations based loosely on Capcom’s survival horror video game series ‘Resident Evil’. I immediately went to see the movie when it premiered on September 23rd, 2010 in The Netherlands.

Plot

As said earlier ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ is already the fourth installment in a series of film adaptations. At the end of ‘Resident Evil: Extinction’ (2007) Alice (Milla Jovovich) frees her clones and declares war to the Umbrella Corporation. The Umbrella Corporation is responsible for creating the T-virus which have turned humans into zombies. It is time to make the Umbrella Corporation pay for what they have unleashed on the world. Together with her clones Alice heads to the Tokyo Headquarters of the Umbrella Corporation. But even though Alice has super human strength, it will not be an easy task.

Thoughts

Even though I have never played any ‘Resident Evil’ videogame, I am a big fan of the film adaptations. I have watched the first and third ‘Resident Evil’ movies. Even though the storyline might not be super original, I have always enjoyed the movies and I totally adore Milla Jovovich as Alice. After seeing the special 3D trailer for ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ I just knew I had to see this movie in the cinema!

I was already familiar with 3D technology after watching Avatar (2009). Since the director used James Cameron’s Fusion Camera System to add the 3D effects, I was really interested to see how it worked out. I must say that I really liked the 3D effects used in ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’. It definitely made a contribution to this fast paced action packed movie. I’m really impressed how the creators used the 3D technology. It made is so worth it to watch the movie in the cinema! I believe ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ is a good example of how to implement 3D effects in an action movie and might even set a new standard.

The story might seem a little bit unoriginal, but I didn’t feel bored while watching the movie. I really loved the choreography of the action scenes. Did I mention the movie also displays some serious girlpower? Awesome! I’m really curious what will happen after this movie. It seems the creators have their cast well set up for a next installment. Only time will tell I guess.

Verdict

In the end I think Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010) is a great 3D action movie. It’s also a perfect movie for guys to watch together with their (action loving) girlfriends. Even if you haven’t seen an earlier ‘Resident Evil’ movie, it’s worth for any action movie fan to go out and see ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ in the cinema!
