I’ve made a few references to The Experiment on Twitter. When I started studying Communication Science at UvA I got very interested in the topic digital divide (?) . One of the fields I find very interesting are how elderly or ‘older people’ interact with ‘new’ technology such as computers, gaming & social media. In an earlier post showcasing Wii & Adults I mentioned that my parents both have worked with elderly people, taking care of them and in policy making. I guess there’s the seed of my interest in this field.
Now that my parents are slowly getting older too, I noticed they are interested in using computers, gaming and social media – but that they are a bit hesitant too. I already gave them a Nintendo DSi together with ‘Brain Age’ two years back, which they used and had fun with. But now I’ve decided to keep a closer eye on them while they adopt more skills for complex computer use, gaming and social media. Next to that I will also ask them to share their thoughts about their experiences and I of course will blog about their views here on elocutio .nu!
I think it’s interesting to take a look at how older people adopt new technology & media for it forces us to take an honest look at usability. It takes us back to the ‘core of things’, not just for eldery people but also for users in general. I’m really excited to start this new blogseries and am looking forward to sharing more insights.
More to come
The Experiment is a new blogseries here on elocutio .nu . In the following blogposts I will look into the various new technology, gaming & social media I’ve introduced to my parents and share their thoughts about this. I will try to share some additional interesting reads or video’s as well. So stay tuned!
