I really enjoyed playing Dragon Age: Chronicles. I loved the story so much that it inspired me to setup the Chronicles blogseries in which I retell the story of the game. When I heard BioWare was working on Dragon Age 2 and saw the Destiny Trailer I got really excited about the new title. After reviewing the storyline and gameplay & technics of the DEMO, I finally spend a few hours with the full game. Time for a First Thought review!
Plot
The story of Dragon Age 2 (2011) revolves around Hawke. A refugee from Lothering which was attacked by Darkspawn in the original Dragon Age: Origins videogame. As the hero flees to safer grounds he starts his very own adventure. The game follows his rise to power, from refugee to champion to legend…
First Thought
I was really eager to find out what happens in Dragon Age 2 after the storyline in the DEMO ended. I really liked how the story was setup and I was ready for a whole new epic adventure. Even though ‘Dragon Age 2′ definitely improved features compared to ‘Dragon Age: Origins’ such as clean UI, smooth fighting and actually voiced answers for your player character… it did not yet sweep me off my feet like ‘Dragon Age: Origins’ did in my first hours of gameplay.
In ‘Dragon Age: Origins’ I played a female noble and seriously felt pressure from being a lonely Grey Warden carrying the burden of saving the world. After the hero of ‘Dragon Age 2′ succesfully flees from Lothering to start his own adventure, the story suddenly becomes a whole lot less dangerous… maybe even a little boring. I sometimes felt I was doing chores instead of quests without the feeling they were very urgent. I’m still in my first hours of gameplay and have concluded the Deeproads quest and somehow the plot finally seems to thicken, at least I think it is.
I’m aware that it’s better to not compare Hawke with the Hero of Ferelden. I think the plot of ‘Dragon Age 2′ simply has a totally different setting and pacing and I’m sure if it was more similar to ‘Dragon Age: Origins’ I wouldn’t have enjoyed it either. I’m happy the plot finally thickens and I’m getting deeper into the story. I have no plans to not complete this game, untill I can formulate my Final Verdict I must say that every Dragon Age fan should definitely play this game! But, maybe not right now if you’re a huge fan of the original game.
