Movie Mix 005

From time to time I will do a Movie Mix which is actually a quickie review for at least 3 movies I’ve seen recently. Most of the movies I review in a ‘movie mix’ have already been released on DVD or are aired on television. I will still do indepth single movie reviews for movies I’ve seen in the cinema or the ones I really really really like a lot e.g. the one I did for Rise of The Planet of The Apes (2011).

In today’s Movie Mix I will be reviewing The Rite (2011), Season of the Witch (2011) and Priest (2011). I originally planned on watching all movies in the cinema, but due to time constraints I was only able to catch them on DVD.

The Rite

Even though I’ve seen several exorcism movies before that weren’t all great movies, I did get interested in ‘The Rite’ (2011) after seeing the trailer and learning Anthony Hopkins would star in it. Even though the movie has an interesting set up and contains some beautiful footage of Rome, it was somewhat of a let down. The leading character of the movie ‘Michael’ is a non believer. He doesn’t believe in demons nor thinks exorcism is needed when people act weird e.g. spitting out nails or knowing things they aren’t supposed to know. Unfortunately the writers pushed Mark’s scepticism about demons and exorcism too far resulting in destroying the credibility of his character and the storyline of the movie. ‘The Rite’ is still a decent movie if you’re a fan of the genre, but definitely don’t watch it when you’re into smarter exorcism movies.

Season of the Witch

The trailer of ‘Season of the Witch’ (2011) looked promising. I knew it would probably not be an epic movie, but it would be enjoyable. I actually thought this movie was more enjoyable that ‘The Rite’ (2011). While watching the movie I went from wondering if the girl was simply innocent to being a witch to maybe being more that an ordinary witch *gulp* Even though the CGI did look cheap, I enjoyed the climax of the movie. If you’re fan of the genre and have a rainy afternoon to spare, it’s definitely worth watching!

Priest

I never got the chance to see ‘Priest’ (2011) in the cinema simply because it never got a theatrical release here in The Netherlands. I can be honest about it: I was very disappointed I couldn’t watch it in the cinema. After watching the movie on DVD I think I can understand a little why it never reached the cinema, but I’ve seen worse movies on the big screen – so I’m still a little pissed. This movie could have been truly epic, but with a length of only 84 minutes it never even got a chance to be über awesome. The story has a great setting, the effects and battle sequences were amazing.. if only they had taken more time to build up the story and create more sympathy for the characters *sighs* If you’re an action fan you should really pick up this title and watch it. Even though it’s way too short, it’s still a must see!
