Movie Mix 006

From time to time I will do a Movie Mix which is actually a quickie review for at least 3 movies I’ve seen recently. Most of the movies I review in a ‘movie mix’ have already been released on DVD or are aired on television. I will still do indepth single movie reviews for movies I’ve seen in the cinema or the ones I really really really like a lot e.g. the one I did for The Secret World of Arrietty (2010).

In today’s Movie Mix I will be reviewing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011), Conan the Barbarian (2011) and The Eagle (2011). I watched the first two movies in the cinema, the third I caught on DVD.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: part 2

I mentioned before that I didn’t catch a Harry Potter film in the cinema until the first part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Even though I haven’t read the books I’ve always enjoyed the movies on TV and DVD. After the great build up in ‘Part 1′ of course I was totally looking forward to watching ‘Part 2′ in 3D! The final chapter does not disappoint in any way. ‘Part 1′ has already set up the story, in ‘Part 2′ the audience finally get to see the grand finale. I was truly impressed by the film and actually felt sad to know it is all over. If you ever watched a Harry Potter movie and enjoyed it, but are not really a big fan or something – you still need to watch this movie. Be sure to catch one of the final showings of the movie in the cinema, it’s a must see ~

Conan the Barbarian

I was still quite young when I watched the original movies with Arnold Schwarzenegger. I can’t remember the full plot details, but I still remember some fuzzy overall details of the original. When I learned about a remake and caught a glimpse of the first minutes of the new Conan movie – I got very interested. When the movie hit the cinema I immediately went out to watch it in 3D. The movie looks stunning, the characters, the setting – all very nice! But as the movie progressed I got more and more disappointed. The movie seemed to follow a distinct pattern: talk a little – fight – talk even less – fight – fight – fight – talk – fight *sighs* The movie has a great setup, but in the end if isn’t really able to tell a strong story. It also has a total lack of character development, for a movie that takes 113 minutes the creators could have easily put something in. You might want to catch it on DVD if you’re a fan of the hack & slash genre and have no problem with the mediocre story.

The Eagle

I must be honest, I didn’t plan on watching The Eagle (2011). But since I usually pick up DVD’s together with my dad, I thought he might enjoy it. The story is quite straightforward, but I wasn’t sure about Channing Tatum as the leading character. It seems that movies always surprise you when you don’t expect too much of it. Same goes for ‘The Eagle’. Even though the story is quite simple, the acting might nog blow you away, the movie is quite enjoyable. The movie doesn’t lean on special effects and is quite raw in that sense. I also love the cinematography of the movie, the highlands of Caledonia look amazing. If you’re not in a hurry and would like to watch a movie with some interesting character twists, you might enjoy ‘The Eagle’.
