Final Verdict: Uncharted 3 Drake’s Deception

I usually write First Thought reviews, because I believe videogames truly need to sink in while and especially after you play them. Finishing a game quickly and immediately writing a review about it, well.. that’s just not my style. I finished Uncharted 2 within three days and was pretty quick writing a ‘final verdict’ for it. Looking back I might have been a little too harsh because I didn’t let the game sink in. Even though I’ve just finished Uncharted 3 I decided to go ahead and write a ‘final verdict’ review. There’s no need to let this title sink in whatsoever!

Plot

Uncharted 3 again follows the adventure of Nathan Drake. This time he is following the trail of T.E. Lawrence and his ancestor Sir Francis Drake to the lost city of Ubar. Finding the lost city would be an amazing accomplishment, but it seems something else is driving Nathan to finish this quest. Will he risk everything to find this treasure?

Final Verdict

Even though the main story of Uncharted 3 is rather short and you can finish the game within a weekend, which is similar to the two earlier installments, I actually didn’t mind I managed to complete the game pretty fast. The storyline simply can’t be stretched further. Uncharted 3 is a fast action packed adventure game which sweeps you off your feet similar to a great movie in the same genre.

It was Uncharted 2 (2009) that won the title ‘Best Game of The Year’ at the Spike Video Game Awards. I think most gamers thought the title used the full power of the PlayStation 3. But Naughty Dog managed to push the little black box even further. Uncharted 3 looks gorgeous! The characters, the locations.. it’s all nicely detailed. During my first play through I just didn’t know where to look, being amazed of the beautiful surroundings while trying to keep up with the fast paced storyline. I’m definitely going to try to slow down a bit during my next playthrough. I wanna take a good look around! The game is also optimized for 3D gaming, but unfortunately I haven’t been able to check out how that looks. I’m sure it looks just stunning.

I think this third installment of Uncharted is quite refreshing. Even though Drake is still looking for a treasure, the lost city of Ubar, it’s not only about treasure. It’s more personal. I like how Drake companions question his motives. I really enjoyed the peek into Drake’s past. I’m not sure if that clears things up or makes Drake more of a mystery. I definitely think this installment has matured Drake and the Uncharted series. So I’m really looking forward to a next installment. That is, if he continues to look for treasure after all of this *gulp*

Uncharted 3 is simply an amazing game that will sweep you off your feet. It’s definitely a must buy title and if you don’t have a PlayStation 3 yet – buy the bundle. Yes, it’s THAT worth it!

Uncharted 3 is developed by Naughty Dog & published by Sony Computer Entertainment
