Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011) is an action spy film directed by Brad Bird. It’s the fourth installment in the Mission: Impossible series and again features Tom Cruise as IMF agent Ethan Hunt. It’s been 4 years since Mission: Impossible III was released. Even though the trailer wasn’t very exciting, I did wanted to watch this new release in the cinema. I caught the movie in the cinema on the official Dutch release day: December 21st!

Plot
Ethan Hunt is busted out of a Moscow prison by IMF agents Jane Carter and Benji Dunn. The two agents were following the trail of a person of interest nick-named Cobalt. Hunt needs to lead the two agents while infiltrating the Kremlin to find out more about Cobalt. Even though the infiltration is a succes they can’t find any information about Cobalt. During the mission someone broadcasts over Hunt’s frequency alerting the Russians of their presence! Hunt and his team are able to escape, but when they’re outside a bomb goes off. Hunt gets knocked out by the blast and finds himself in a hospital after he wakes up. But, he is also handcuffed by Russian agents. They believe he is responsible for the explosion!
Hunt manages to escape from the hospital and reunites with his team. It seems Cobalt is a much bigger fish than they expected. He is out to get his hands on special codes so he can launch a nuclear device! The Russian government believes the explosion at the Kremlin was an undeclared act of war. The US president decides to activate Ghost Protocol and denies the existence of and all links with IMF. Hunt believes the only way to clear the name of the Impossible Mission Force is to take care of Cobalt. Will Hunt and his team be able to stop this maniac from launching a nuclear device and save the world? They have no plan and there’s no backup, but they simply have no choice but to do something!
Thoughts
When it comes to action movies I’m always a bit hesitant after watching the trailer. Most trailers give away the best bits of the movie and the trailer is almost a short summary of the whole movie. So I decided not to get my hopes up and went to see the movie with low to neutral expectations. Hahaha somehow that always turns out for the best, because ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ is very exciting movie!
Even though the story is based on an ancient recipe: beat the bad guy, save the world & clear your own name – it’s actually very well executed. I really like the creators didn’t go overboard with special effects making the action very real and raw. I must say the sequence at the Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai, the tallest building of the world, is very entertaining and truly impressive! Overall the movie has some pretty cool action sequences and has great pacing. I’m glad the creators used 133 minutes to tell the story, the movie doesn’t feel rushed in any way.
I really like how the other IMF agents starred next to main character Ethan Hunt and weren’t just side kicks. They were as capable as Hunt and definitely kicked some ass. Girlfight anyone? Hahaha, that was awesome! In the end I really had the feeling I was looking at a team and I hope we’ll see them back in a next Mission: Impossible adventure.
Verdict
If you’re a fan of classic real & raw action movies without all the over the top special effects, you definitely have to watch Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011) ! And of course you have to watch it in the cinema preferably in an IMAX theatre ;) The movie is a perfect mix between action and a good laugh. Great night guaranteed!
